Evaluation of a new test to detect cognitive impairment in patients with small vessel disease stroke
Small Vessel Disease (SVD) is a condition that affects the small blood vessels in the brain, and it can lead to stroke and dementia. This research programme hopes to increase our understanding of how SVD develops, leading to new ways to investigate SVD and test drugs which may help treat it.

Stroke survivors and healthcare professionals have identified problems with thinking and mood after stroke as some of the most important issues faced after a stroke. This Lectureship aims to test treatments to help stroke survivors with their cognitive (thinking) difficulties.
The aim of this research is to develop and test a simple yet widely-applicable outcome measure for evaluating cognitive rehabilitation after stroke. Consultation with patients and carers will shape the design and content of the measure.

Cognitive impairments after stroke can affect people’s confidence and mood as well as their ability to recover. PRECiS stands for ‘Patient-Reported Evaluation of Cognitive State’. It is a 27 item questionnaire tool, that measures the perceived impact of cognitive problems from the unique perspective of stroke survivors. Published open access in the journal
This Lectureship will explore the link between tests that are used to assess cognition (memory and thinking) after a stroke and measurements of stroke survivor's functional abilities. It will also investigate how cognition and functional ability change over time.
