The Stroke Association is incorporated as a company limited by guarantee and is governed by a Council of Trustees who automatically become directors of the company.

There are currently about 20 trustees. The term of office for trustees is three years and there is a maximum of three terms that they can serve.

Although we have a number of stroke survivors and medical experts on the Council, you don't have to be either to be considered. Anyone can be put forward as a trustee and people may nominate themselves, or someone else they think may be suitable (with their consent). However, the legal duties and responsibilities of being a charity trustee require a high level of integrity as well as expertise in one or more areas.

In order to have the necessary range of skills available to the Council we need people who have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • medical / clinical / therapy
  • public Health
  • research
  • commercial / Business acumen
  • knowledge of the community / political experience
  • experience of stroke / disability
  • marketing / media / PR / lobbying skills
  • NHS / social services / public sector
  • third sector experience
  • fundraising.

There are a number of committees that deal with or oversee various aspects of the organisation (eg audit, investment, research) for which specialist expertise is required.

Trustees need to be able to contribute to discussion concerning the strategic direction of the Association, and play a key role in monitoring implementation of our corporate strategy, agreeing variations in strategic emphasis and solutions to issues and obstacles.

Trustees are required to enter into a commitment to attend meetings and undergo induction training. They must not be disqualified from acting as a trustee or a company director. Trustees are also asked to represent the Association in a variety of ways, so contributing time and energy outside of formal meetings would also be expected.

If and when there is a vacancy for a trustee that fits your skills, your CV will be considered by our Nominations Committee. The committee members may wish to interview people before making any recommendation to the Council.
