New research suggests brain scans could help predict brain bleed risk in patients on anticoagulant drugs.

The CROMIS-2 study investigated whether signs of small brain bleeds on routine brain scans can help us understand which ischaemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation are at increased risk of a bleed in the brain when on anticoagulant ‘blood thinning’ drugs.
ELAN: Comparing early versus late use of oral anticoagulant drugs in stroke patients with an abnormal heart rhythm

This study will investigate whether early initiation of direct anticoagulant drugs will be as safe as later initiation in stroke patients with an abnormal heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation). It will also investigate whether early initiation could lead to fewer recurrent strokes.
Searching for medicines that can reduce damage after a bleed in the brain

This research will investigate 2000 drugs that are already known to be safe for use in humans to see if they could help reduce the amount of damage to the brain which an intracerebral haemorrhage (a type of stroke caused by a bleed in the brain) causes.
Developing new models to better understand and allow testing of new therapies for small vessel disease and vascular dementia

Small Vessel Disease (SVD) is a condition that affects the small blood vessels in the brain, and it can lead to stroke and dementia. This research programme hopes to increase our understanding of how SVD develops, leading to new ways to investigate SVD and test drugs which may help treat it.
ATTEST 2: A trial comparing the new “clot busting” drug treatment tenecteplase with standard clot-busting treatment

Currently, a drug called alteplase is used in thrombolysis, but the researchers think that another drug, called tenecteplase, may be more effective than alteplase.
