Stroke Awareness Month took place in May 2023.

To support Stroke Awareness Month, we invited you to get involved in our spring campaign "Let's talk aphasia" in May 2023.

As part of the campaign, and to celebrate Aphasia Awareness Month in June 2023, we released a documentary film on 26 May: When the Words Away Went. The film follows a group of stroke survivors with aphasia as they embark on a journey to find their voice and rebuild their lives. Watch the film now.

#LetsTalkAphasia

Did you know that 40% of stroke survivors have aphasia soon after a stroke?

You're not alone. Many people don't even know what aphasia is.

Aphasia is a communication problem that affects a stroke survivor's ability to speak and understand what others say. Aphasia can cost stroke survivors their independence, the ability to work and to communicate with their loved ones.

Kelly's story

Portrait image of stroke survivor Kelly smiling at camera

In 2017, Kelly had two strokes. They left her with aphasia - a condition that impacts speech and language.

Five years on, Kelly has made huge progress. She still mixes up pronouns and words, and struggles with some processing. But with determination and support from her partner, friends and family, Kelly is learning to live life well with aphasia.

After my strokes, my speech and language wasn't functional. I felt like a child again. I couldn't do things like speak with the bank. On the phone, they would ask for my name, address and phone number but I couldn't say it. It makes you feel real anxiety.
