Last July, we launched our Saving Brains report and campaign. This campaign called for 24/7 access to thrombectomy for anyone who is eligible.
Our campaign highlighted the game-changing nature of thrombectomy treatment. It can:
- transform recoveries after stroke
- significantly reduce chances of disability
- and also save the NHS £73 million annually
We also highlighted the unacceptably low treatment rates.
The campaign included an Open Letter to the government and a parliamentary reception. We also spoke to national and local decision-makers about the importance of thrombectomy.
What has changed?
One year on from our Saving Brains campaign, we've seen some good progress.
- Many thrombectomy centres are operating 24/7 to treat more patients.
- A thrombectomy credential has been approved. This means more clinicians can train to perform the procedure.
- Treatment rates are gradually increasing.
But the pace of change is simply unacceptable.
It's great news that the overall thrombectomy rate has increased from 2.8% to 3.3% in England. But last year 6,903 people who needed a thrombectomy missed out on the treatment across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Whether someone can access a thrombectomy still depends on where they live and when they have their stroke.

We've launched a Saving Brains: one year on progress report. It celebrates the progress we've made over the last year. It also highlights the next steps needed to continue increasing treatment rates.
This report focuses on England specifically. But it includes progress and policy calls across the UK for context.
