Harvinder's story

Since joining the Stroke Association as a Stroke Support Coordinator two years ago, Harvinder Kaur has worked with stroke survivors, carers and their families and friends in communities all over London. When she was introduced to My Stroke Guide, she instantly recognised the benefits it could have for the people she supported.

"Some people do not know about stroke until they have one, so My Stroke Guide is an excellent way for them to get the all the information they need in one place," she says.

"The social forums are excellent. When you need to discuss something with people, you can post on the forums or have private conversations through 'My messages'. Perhaps most importantly, people who cannot get out of their home can keep interactive and social without leaving the house. They can get reassurance and advice from other people who use it."

Not only has she seen such positive improvements in stroke survivors, but she has noticed that My Stroke Guide has also made her more knowledgeable about stroke, and its effects. "It's helped me to learn new information that I can pass on to the people I meet. I also regularly use the videos at my communication group sessions as the sound, subtitles and visuals help people with aphasia to access the information."

Now a coordinator in Haringey, Harvinder frequently demonstrates My Stroke Guide at her stroke groups. "It's nice to see their enthusiasm for the website and to see them growing in confidence and feeling more positive as they start to use it."
